RASPO's new rehearsal space at 59 Station Hill has come about courtesy of Jelly who have acquired the building opposite Reading railway station that was once Club Mannakoo.
The newly titled 'Jelly Sound House', encourages music based projects like RASPO, to flourish and grow. The steel band musicians can continue planning and rehearsing for their summer programme launching with performances at Reading Carnival and Children's Festival workshops in steel pan music and carnival head dress making. More.
Since January this year Jelly and CultureMix have been working together to create 'Reading is the Gallery' and 'Reading is the Carnival' to celebrate 2012. The new space will see this collaboration coming together.
Weekly workshops continue for beginners in steel pan music and carnival arts including costume making, Caribbean style dance, and flag and banner making. The space also offers storage and office space.
RASPO's manager Mary Genis, the Artistic Director of CultureMix Arts says, 'Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra is extremely grateful to Jelly's director Suzanne Stallard who is supporting the professional development of our young musicians by providing rehearsal space thus enabling growth and sustainability for Reading's award winning steel orchestra.'
