A delegation from RASPO Steel Orchestra attended the British Association of Steelbands'12th Annual Dinner and Dance at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury.
The event is the highlight of the year for pan players and pan lovers with leaders and players from most of the UK's steel orchestras in attendance including Ebony, SV2G from High Wycombe, Metronomes and London All Stars.
Three awards went to Croydon Steel Orchestra, one for ten years of activity, another for best conventional steelband on the the road 2010, and leader Paul Dowie received an outstanding achievement award from the Pan Tuners Guild.
Mary, Kisha, Aynsley and Darryl received the Randolph Baptiste Inspirational Award from Stardust's Tara Baptiste on behalf of RASPO. A proud moment for all of us.
The event also paid homage to BAS Chair and leader of Ebony Steelband Pepe Francis for his work promoting steel pan music over many decades. The highlight of the evening was a tongue in cheek perspective of Pepe's leadership style by comedian and Ebony musician Kayleigh 'Loudmouth' Lewis who had the audience in stitches with her ironic wit and hilarious interpretations of life as a member of Ebony.
Kayleigh described busking as 'child labour' stating that Pepe would use the band's hard earned cash to swan off to Trinidad. The audience were open mouthed by her string of well timed acerbic anecdotes. All very good natured fun delivered in jest no doubt!
With a Caribbean buffet banquet to start the evening and two hours of dancing to fabulous music to finish, the highlight of the event was undoubtedly Kayleigh's comedy moment and of course RASPO receiving it's second BAS award.
