In 1997 Reading Borough Council organised a carnival project by setting up a 'Mas Camp' making carnival costumes, and a 'PanYard' offering steel pan music workshops at Open Hand Open Space (OHOS). The project succeeded in its aim to bring the West Reading communities together attracting families and people of all ages, and establishing what was to become Reading All Steel Percussion Orchestra.
OHOS is an artist-led centre providing affordable studio and exhibition space for contemporary artists in Reading. Since its foundation in 1980 in a former military keep, its studios or exhibition spaces have been used by more than a hundred artists.
